Why gift cards can feel impersonal

Gift cards are practical. The person gets to choose what they want, nothing needs wrapping, and nothing gets lost in the post. The trouble is that a code and an amount on their own don't say much about you, or about why you thought of them.

Personalizing a gift card isn't about decoration. It's about adding the part a code can't carry: that you know them, and that you remembered.

Five ways to make a gift card personal

1. Choose a brand that fits them

The most personal thing about a gift card is the brand. Pick somewhere they already shop, eat or spend time, not a general choice that fits anyone. Each brand sets the amounts it offers, and you choose from those.

2. Give it a setting with their name on it

It sounds small, but a gift that greets someone by name reads as meant for them. When you send a gift card inside one of our cards, the card carries their name on the front, and even the wording on the gift page is yours to change.

3. Say why you chose it

Skip "enjoy!" and say why you picked it. "For the coffee that gets you through Mondays" or "Because you never buy yourself anything nice" does more than any design could. Put it in the card's message, or say it in a video.

4. Add a personal video

5. Send it at the right moment

A gift that arrives on the birthday feels more thoughtful than one that arrives two days later with an apology. You can schedule a gift card for a future date so it lands on the day.

Sending a gift card on its own

You don't need to choose an ecard to send a gift card. A standalone gift card is the quickest way to give when the gift is the main event.

1. Go to gift cards and choose a brand.
2. Pick an amount from the values that brand offers.
3. Add a personal video message if you'd like one. This is where a standalone gift gets its personal touch.
4. Send it now or schedule it, and choose how you'd like to send it.

The recipient opens a private link in the browser on their phone, tablet or computer. No app is needed.

When a standalone gift card makes sense

• A thank-you to a teacher, coach, host or neighbor.
• A gift for a colleague, when a full card would feel like too much.
• Someone you've already sent a card to, or will see in person.
• A last-minute gift, since there's nothing to ship.

Sending a gift card inside an animated card

For a birthday or a real moment of recognition, a gift card inside a card has more to open. Some of our animated 3D cards have a dedicated gift page, so the gift card sits inside the card alongside your message.

The gift amount you choose goes to the gift card and is always shown separately from our fees.

• Standalone gift card: $2.99 delivery fee plus the gift amount.
• Standalone gift card with a video: $4.99 plus the gift amount.
• Inside a card: the card is $4.99, plus a $2.99 gift service fee and the gift amount, or $4.99 for video and gift together, plus the gift amount.
