Two ways to send a gift card with a video

Which one you choose depends on whether you want an animated card to open first.

1. A gift card and video, on their own

This is the simplest option. You choose a brand and an amount, add your video message, and send it. The recipient opens a private link, watches your video, and gets their gift card. No card design to choose.

It suits workplace thank-yous, a quick birthday gift for someone you know well, or any time you want the gift to be the main thing. Start at gift cards.

2. Inside an animated 3D card

If you want the full experience, choose a card with a gift page. The recipient opens a moving card, finds the gift card on one inside page, and your written message and video on the other. Today the Happy Birthday Bear, Quite A Catch and Gold Star cards include a gift page.

Why add a video to a gift card

A gift card on its own can feel like a transaction, even when a lot of thought went into choosing it. A short video changes that. The recipient hears why you picked it, sees your face, and gets something they'll want to watch more than once.

• It explains the choice: "You said you'd been wanting new running shoes, so here's a start."
• It carries tone a typed note can't, like a laugh or an inside joke.
• It lets several people give together: a family or a team can appear in one clip.
• It works across distance, when you can't hand the gift over yourself.

How it works

1. Choose a gift card from the brands available and pick an amount from the values that brand offers.
2. Add your video message: record one or upload a video you've already made.
3. If you're sending it inside a card, add their name and your own words too.
4. Send it now, or schedule it for a future date. You choose how you'd like to send it.

The recipient opens a private link in the browser on their phone, tablet or computer. There's no app and no account needed to see the video and the gift.

A note on sound

If you send the gift card and video inside an animated card, the card can have its own music. It pauses while your video plays, so your message is never talking over a soundtrack. Card music and video sound are always controlled separately, and you decide whether the card plays music at all.

Choosing the brand and amount

Gift cards come from popular brands, and each brand sets which amounts it offers. You pick from those values. A few practical pointers:

• Choose a brand they already use, not one you think they should try.
• Match the amount to the relationship and the occasion, not to what the fees are.
• If you mention the gift in your video, keep it general in case you change your mind about the brand before sending.
• A modest gift with a heartfelt video often means more than a larger gift with no message.
